Characteristics of Adult Learners

1. Adult learning is self-directed/autonomous
2. Adult learning utilizes knowledge & life experiences
3. Adult learning is goal-oriented
4. Adult learning is relevancy-oriented
5. Adult learning highlights practicality
6. Adult learning encourages collaboration

Facilitate the process of goal-setting with the learners to promote self-direction. Provide a learning environment where they have the “freedom to assume responsibility for their own choices”. Learner choice is an excellent way to personalize a course. Personalization can be through using branch logic , artificial intelligence (AI), or learner intelligence (LI). LI is offering enough options for the learner to select an appropriate option but not so many as to overwhelm the learner.

Encourage and assist learners to tie relevant past knowledge and experiences to new content. Learner motivation increases when the lesson relevance to real-life situation application is clear. “If it is clear that the activities they are engaged into, directly contribute to achieving their personal learning objectives, then they will be inspired and motivated to engage in projects and successfully complete them”. “It is very important for educators to identify appropriate ways and convert theoretical learning to practical activities”.

“When learners are considered by their instructors as colleagues, they become more productive. When their contributions are acknowledged, then they are willing to put out their best work”.
